Disability Services Policy and Programs

Disability Services focuses on:

  • supporting individuals to access and participate in the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)
  • co-funding, monitoring and informing the policy and regulatory context of the NDIS
  • supporting individuals, families and carers to have greater control over matters that directly affect their lives and circumstances
  • supporting responsive, accessible and sustainable services for people who are not eligible for the NDIS
  • administering the Disability Services Act 2011
  • developing consultation policies that deliver comprehensive and genuine engagement with people with disability taking full account of their needs and circumstances
  • supporting access to universal services through facilitating collaboration across governments and sectors
  • informing the sector to better meet changing needs and future requirements; and
  • working collaboratively with the NDIA in full scheme

National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)

NDIS is responsible for funding support provided by specialist disability services.

If you are not eligible for the NDIS, eligibility for specialist disability services administered under the Disability Services Act 2011 requires that to be eligible  a person must:

  • Have a disability as defined in the Disability Services Act 2011;
  • Live permanently in Tasmania and be: an Australian citizen; or a permanent Australian resident; or a Temporary Protection Visa holder; or a member of a family on a work or study visa sponsored by the Australian Government.
  • Have a disability that manifests before the age of 65 years.

Advocacy Services

Advocacy services are designed to enable people with a disability to increase the control they have over their lives through representation of their interests and views in the community.
