Our inclusive island

All Tasmanians have the right to feel safe and equal across all parts of their life, regardless of sex, sexuality, gender identity or sex characteristics.

LGBTIQA+ is an acronym used to represent lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and gender non-binary and gender diverse, intersex, queer or questioning, and asexual and other sexual orientations and gender identities.

LGBTIQA+ Tasmanians can face stigma, prejudice and discrimination. We work to address the underlying drivers of discrimination, stigma and prejudice and make sure government services meet the needs of LGBTIQA+ Tasmanians. The Australian Bureau of Statistics estimates that 1 in 20 people, or 4.7 per cent of Tasmanians over the age of 16, identify as LGBTIQA+.

The Tasmanian Government's vision is a Tasmania where LGBTIQA+ people are safe, healthy, visible and valued: living with dignity, belonging and pride.

The Our Inclusive Island: Tasmania’s LGBTIQA+ Strategy 2025-2030 sets the direction for the Tasmanian Government to improve the lives of LGBTIQA+ Tasmanians.

It provides a whole-of-government approach, acknowledging all Tasmanian Government agencies have a role to play to advance outcomes for LGBTIQA+ people. The strategy highlights the positive work that is currently underway across Tasmanian Government agencies but notes there is more work to be done. A two-page summary (PDF 366.8KB) accompanies the strategy.

The strategy draws on the expertise and knowledge of our key community partners, Working It Out and Equality Tasmania. It also reflects the voices of more than 800 people who took part in the largest-ever survey of LGBTIQA+ Tasmanians, captured in the Telling Us the Story consultation by the University of Tasmania.
