Food for all Tasmanians; A Food Security Strategy

In 2009 the Government established the Tasmanian Food Security Council and a $1 million Tasmanian Food Security Fund in response to recommendations in A Social Inclusion Strategy for Tasmania.

The Terms of Reference for the Council outlined its role to develop a Tasmanian Food Security Strategy and provide advice on the administration of the Tasmanian Food Security Fund.

In March 2012 the Premier launched Food for All Tasmanians: A Food Security Strategy at the Ulverstone Community House, (Lugana Cresent, Ulverstone).

A Food Security Strategy

Food for All Tasmanians: A Food Security Strategy identifies Tasmanians on low incomes, older people, young people (especially children in single parent households) and people who live in isolated places as those most likely to be food insecure, and outlines why this is the case.

The Strategy focuses on local solutions to increase access to affordable and nutritious food for all Tasmanians, but in particular those most at risk.

Food for All Tasmanians outlines 12 priority actions across four key strategies and advises that the following actions be prioritised:

  • immediately increase food access and affordability;
  • build on existing community food solutions in the short-term; and
  • support food social enterprises and food sensitive planning strategies in the medium to longer term.
