The Tasmanian Government is providing $1.5 million over three years to enable the Tasmanian Community Transport Trust to deliver two Cars for Communities grant rounds per year. How transport can make a difference:Lack of transport can stand in the way of Tasmanians being involved in many aspects of community life – education, employment, social activities, and accessing services and other support networks. Individuals and organisations told the Social Inclusion Unit, during consultation in late 2008 and early 2009, that providing community managed transport services supported by Government investment could help remove these barriers. This first grant opened on 5 August 2009 and applications closed on 2 September 2009. The next grant will open in February 2010. Round one successful applicants:On 23 September 2009 the Premier, David Bartlett announced the 12 successful applicants for Round One of the program. A total of $500,000 has been committed to the following organisations to purchase vehicles to provide communtiy transport services:
Who can apply?
Successful applicants will receive funding to buy a vehicle, but must be able to independently fund the ongoing management and maintenance of the vehicle. Successful applicants may be eligible to access Tasmanian Government contracts that may reduce the cost of fuel and the initial purchase cost of the vehicle. Applications for recurrent costs will not be considered and funding will not be provided for costs already incurred through the delivery of existing services.
