In October 1998, a broad agreement was reached between the University of Tasmania and the Tasmanian Government on a cooperative venture of public sector internships.

This partnership aims to forge a closer working relationship between the State's two largest employers. It creates a range of opportunities for both the Government and the university.

The program is open to public policy honours students and select third year students who have completed School of Government subjects at distinction level or students who have a grade point average of 6.5 or higher in 200 level units in public policy.

The program is run each year from the School of Government at the University of Tasmania.

Interns undertake a research project within State Service agencies for a period of approximately 14 weeks.  The internship is offered each semester.  The academic component is coordinated by the School of Government Internship Coordinator and the workplace supervision and mentoring by each agency and the Public Sector Management Office.

Agencies submit project proposals at the end of each year and the interns are able to choose a project that best matches their particular public policy interest area.

The benefit of the program for the State Service is that it encourages talented young graduates to undertake research that may not otherwise be accomplished. The benefit to the university is obtaining research opportunities through access to State Service agencies.
