2013 Tasmanian Bushfires Inquiry

The 2013 Tasmanian Bushfires Inquiry Report was released on 15 October 2013.

The Inquiry Report was prepared by a team led by Special Investigator Mal Hyde.

The Report made 103 recommendations which relate to:

  • Fire operations: 25 recommendations
  • Police operations: 5 recommendations
  • Traffic management: 4 recommendations
  • Community communications and warnings: 9 recommendations
  • Evacuation: 6 recommendations
  • Emergency management arrangements: 11 recommendations
  • Recovery: 8 recommendations
  • General: 35 recommendations

Each recommendation has been assigned to a responsible agency  and implementation of the recommendations is being overseen by State Emergency Management Committee (SEMC).

When a recommendation is reported as complete by the responsible agency, evidence of completion is collected by the Office of Security and Emergency Management and sent to the Tasmanian Audit Office (TAO). The TAO either confirms that the recommendation is complete or identifies issues that require resolution.

In October 2015 the Auditor-General Mike Blake tabled a report to Parliament concluding that there had been a ‘high level of implementation’ of the recommendations of the 2013 Tasmanian Bushfires Inquiry.
