Local Government Legislation and Reviews

Local government legislation sets out the legal framework to support the good governance of all Tasmanian councils and ensure councils are sustainable, effective and accountable.

The Office of Local Government provides education, training and guidance to councils and councillors on their legislative responsibilities.

The Director of Local Government administers local government legislation in Tasmania subject to the direction of the Minister for Local Government.

This means the Director

  • monitors councils and councillors compliance with their legislative obligations and undertaking investigations, when necessary
  • ensures legislation is relevant and undertakes reviews when necessary
  • recommends changes to amend the laws if needed
  • ensures councils and councillors are made aware of changes to their obligations if the legislation is amended

The Office of Local Government administers the Dog Control Act and the Burial and Cremation Act.
