The Local Government (Meeting Procedures) Regulations 2015

The Local Government (Meeting Procedures) Regulations 2015 took effect from 29 June 2015. The Regulations amend and remake the Local Government (Meeting Procedures) Regulations 2005 which prescribe meeting procedures for councils and council committees, including procedures for:

  • Convening and adjourning meetings
  • Closed meetings
  • Council motions and voting
  • Minutes and agendas; and
  • other procedural matters.

The new Regulations make changes to the procedures for notification of meetings, adjournment of meetings, closed meetings, council motions, minutes of meetings and miscellaneous matters. The new Regulations also make a number of definitional amendments to increase clarity and consistency within the Regulations and between the Regulations and the Local Government Act 1993.

Consultation with stakeholders and the public supported mainly minor amendments to the 2005 regulations. The Local Government Association of Tasmania coordinated the local government consultation response and was consulted closely on the detail of the amendments.

Information about the key changes made in the Regulations can be found in the information sheet, Local Government (Meetings Procedures) Regulations 2015 - Key changes.

Information on the provisions in the Regulations more generally can be found in the information sheet, Council Meeting Procedures.

Queries in relation to the Regulations can be directed to the Local Government Division either by telephone on (03) 6232 7022 or by email to lgd@dpac.tas.gov.au.
