Investigation into the Derwent Valley Council

Between October and December 2016, the Director of Local Government received complaints about:

  • the governance and operations of the Derwent Valley Council
  • the failure of the Council to adopt the Model Code of Conduct before 13 July 2016 as required by the Local Government Act 1993 (the Act)

Given the nature of the complaints, the Director undertook an investigation into the Council under the Act.

The investigation involved interviews with councillors and senior Council staff, and the examination of Council documents.

In August 2017 the Director provided the Council with his investigation report, Director of Local Government Report to the Derwent Valley Council August 2017.

The report provides findings and recommendations on the governance and operational issues considered during the investigation. The Council is required to provide regular updates to the Director of Local Government on its implementation of the Report’s recommendations.
