Office of Local Government

The Office of Local Government contributes to the wellbeing of local communities by providing high quality advice and services to the Tasmanian Government, the local government sector and the public to ensure that councils are well-governed, responsive and sustainable acting in the best interest of their communities.

The Office does this by:

  • providing expert policy advice on local government matters;
  • administering and ensuring the sector’s compliance with relevant legislative and regulatory provisions;
  • enhancing local government performance by supporting good governance practices and ensuring transparent performance monitoring;
  • delivering education and training;
  • supporting the Local Government Board and Boards of Inquiry; and
  • ensuring regular contact between the Tasmanian Government and local government so that the sector’s views inform key regulatory and policy decisions, including through supporting the Premier’s Local Government Council (PLGC).
