Women in local government
Thinking about standing for council in 2009?The WomenCan campaign is a call for women to stand for their local council this October. In Tasmania, women make up 52 per cent of the population, yet less than a quarter of councillors are women. WomenCan is a targeted campaign to increase women’s participation by providing encouragement, information and support to women interested in nominating for Tasmanian councils in the 2009 local government elections. The campaign also aims to raise awareness within the community of the importance of diverse representation and councils that accurately reflect the diversity within their communities. On these pages you will find information on upcoming workshops and events and fact sheets to help you decide whether being a councillor is for you. There is information on how to run a winning campaign and who you can talk to if you need more help or advice, including information on the ALGWA mentoring network. These pages are updated regularly. If you would like to be kept up-to-date on the campaign, the latest news and upcoming events please join our mailing list by emailing wilg@dpac.tas.gov.au. The campaign is a Premier’s Local Government Council (PLGC) program and is jointly supported by the Department of Premier and Cabinet, the Local Government Association of Tasmania (LGAT) and the Australian Local Government Women’s Association (ALGWA). Nominations for the positions of councillor, mayor and deputy mayor close at 12 noon, 28 September 2009. Latest news
