Meeting 29: 7 May 2009Premier's Local Government CouncilThe Premier’s Local Government Council (PLGC) held its 29th meeting on 7 May 2009, in Hobart, Tasmania. The Premier made two significant announcements at the meeting: he released the report on the evaluation of the State Government’s program of partnership agreements with local government, and launched an initiative aimed at increasing women’s participation in the 2009 Tasmanian local government elections. The PLGC agreed to take a leading role in the development of regional and statewide priorities for future partnerships. The Council agreed that partnerships delivered solutions to short- and long-term challenges facing the State, and that it was well-placed to identify priorities that should be addressed through the partnership agreements program. PLGC members Mayors Deirdre Flint and Lynn Laycock agreed to champion the women in local government campaign. The objective of the campaign is to attract an increased number of women to stand in the 2009 local government elections, and to increase the number of women elected to local government from where it currently stands at 23.7 per cent. The Premier updated the Council on the status of the Nation Building and Jobs Plan Facilitation (Tasmania) Act 2009 which was discussed in detail by the Council at its special meeting on 20 March 2009. The Premier noted that representatives from key government agencies and local government would be meeting in the near future to discuss implementation of the legislation. Local government representatives raised concerns in relation to the community service obligation arrangements for water and sewerage following implementation of the reforms on 1 July 2009. The Council agreed that the matter required further discussion. Local government members also raised concerns regarding proposed changes to the state planning system. The Council noted that the Minister for Planning had responded to local government concerns, and had deferred the tabling of one of the related bills to consult further. The next meeting of the PLGC is scheduled for 7 August 2009, in Launceston. |
