Main street makeovers

The main street makeover program is about building proud and vibrant communities.

By June 2008, 30 communities had already given their town a facelift through the main street makeover program. Communities have:

  • beautified their towns
  • upgraded infrastructure
  • improved access
  • installed traffic calming features
  • improved pedestrian safety.

Communities have expressed renewed pride in their town at the conclusion of main street makeovers. Being involved in the planning of the makeover, and creating a main street that genuinely reflects a community’s character, gives residents ownership of their main street. The makeovers create vibrant community hubs, stimulate community activity and enliven central business districts. Communities report stronger community pride as well as economic growth.

Access and safety are high priorities in most main street makeovers. A number of projects have included kerb upgrades to assist people with disability and parents with prams to move around towns. Pedestrian outstands and crossings have been incorporated on some streets to assist safe pedestrian movement across roads. Traffic calming features have also featured in a number of projects.

Unique main streets are a rare gem along tourist routes. Our small towns are a perfect complement to our iconic, internationally renowned tourist destinations. We want our visitors to go home with vivid memories of the small towns, in which they stopped to explore local businesses and purchased quality, local products, as well as the well-known tourist destinations.
