An information sheet PDF icon(PDF, 106KB) has been issued to provide information on the indexed allowances. The information sheet also details related provisions concerning allowances.

Background to making of allowances

The level of councillor allowances is determined through an independent review process agreed between the Local Government Association of Tasmania and the State Government.

In accordance with this agreement, the State Government appointed members of the Tasmanian Industrial Commission as a Board of Inquiry under section 215 (1) (b) of the Local Government Act 1993 to review and report upon appropriate allowances for Mayors, Deputy Mayors and councillors.

The President of the Tasmanian Industrial Commission, Mrs Pat Leary, and Commissioners Tim Abey and James McAlpine formed the Board of Inquiry which prepared the 2008 Report PDF icon(PDF, 349KB)

Its recommendations are the result of an independent review process that attracted submissions from councils, councillors and the public.
