Amendments to the Dog Control Act 2000 were made in 2009 with the aim of increasing public safety and highlighting the responsibilities of dog owners.

The majority of these amendments commenced on 1 July 2010.

In addition, from 1 July 2011 all dogs in Tasmania are now required to be microchipped. A microchip is the best way to identify a lost dog and quickly return it to its owner. Dog owners need to comply with the new control requirements which have been introduced to reduce the risk of dog attacks in the community.
