Having knowledge of and confidence in the water is something many Australians take for granted. Many people in the multicultural community have not grown up around water, with limited opportunities to learn about and be confident in water.
The Tasmanian Government recognises the need to promote and increase the community’s knowledge and understanding of safety in and around water.
On Thursday 16 August 2018, the Multicultural Swimming Program (the Program) was launched by the Minister for Sport and Recreation, the Hon Jacquie Petrusma MP, and the Lord Mayor of Hobart, Alderman Ron Christie.
Through the Program, the Hobart City Council will provide up to 25 six week programs for multicultural Tasmanians at the Doone Kennedy Hobart Aquatic Centre. These sessions will cater for all ages and can be adapted according to need.
The Multicultural Swimming Program is a result of collaboration between the Hobart City Council’s Doone Kennedy Aquatic Centre, the Migrant Resource Centre Tasmania and Communities, Sport and Recreation, a division of the Department of Communities Tasmania.
The attendance of a number of Hobart City Council Alderman, community organisation representatives and members of Tasmania’s multicultural community was a testament to the need and enthusiasm that will drive the success of this water safety initiative.
