The Lieutenant Colonel Harry Murray VC Scholarships promote research and our understanding of Tasmania’s military history, and issues facing veterans. The Scholarships are administered by the University of Tasmania on behalf of the State Government.

The Tasmanian Veterans’ Advisory Council (TVAC), who provided advice and support to the State Government on issues affecting the serving and ex-serving community, recommended the scholarships be named after Lieutenant Colonel Harry Murray born in Evandale in 1880. Lieutenant Colonel Murray believed in training and discipline, and possessed sound tactical skills. He was one of the most decorated infantry soldiers of the British Empire during the First World War and Australia’s most decorated soldier.

Eligibility

Students in their final year of under-graduate study, who are intending to study Honours with a thesis involving Tasmanians’ involvement in the military, are eligible to apply for the scholarships. University students from disciplines such as history, sociology, psychology, political science and philosophy are eligible to apply.
