Climate Smart Tasmania: A 2020 Climate Change Strategy

Climate Smart Tasmania: A 2020 Climate Change Strategy outlines Tasmania's plan for action by state government on climate change. It sets out 9 priority areas and more than 80 actions both to reduce emissions and prepare for the impacts of a changing climate.

The Strategy aims to help Tasmania to reach its emissions reduction target of 60 per cent below 1990 levels by 2050 (as legislated under the Climate Change State Action Act 2008) and support Tasmania to adapt to a changing climate.

The whole-of-government Strategy has been developed with extensive public consultation and input from all Tasmanian Government agencies.

Strategy Implementation

Implementation of the Strategy is already underway. One example is Action 6.3: Investigating an Electric Vehicle Trial. The final report from this project, undertaken by Joule Logic, is available to download:

Strategy Development

Consultation informing the development of the Strategy included incorporating feedback received in response to the Adapting to Climate Change in Tasmania Issues Paper and the Low Carbon Tasmania Issues Paper, released in October 2012 and April 2013 respectively. A total of 93 submissions were received in response to these issues papers, and over 200 people participated in roundtables.

The overwhelming involvement in the consultation process showed a high level of community support for Tasmanian Government leadership on climate change.

Consultation reports and written submissions are available:

In addition, the Tasmanian Climate Change Office commissioned two reports which analysed the abatement potential of actions being considered for inclusion in the Strategy.  These reports are available to download:
