"People who walk to work are generally healthier, more productive and less likely to be sick or absent."
This annual event is now in its 20th year and encourages employers and employees to build regular walking into their daily routine. The aims of the day are to raise funds for Diabetes Australia, promote regular walking for good health and to reduce the incidence of Type 2 diabetes. Other benefits are to reduce our reliance on cars, promote public transport and improve air quality.
The aim is to build more activity into your day. This could mean walking to work, or getting off public transport a few stops early and walking the rest of the way. Or, you could drive and leave your car a little further away and walk the rest. If these options don't work for you, think about going for a walk at lunchtime or using the stairs instead of the lift.
