National Recycling Week

Start Date 12th Nov 2018
End Date 18th Nov 2018
Location National
Description

How's your recycling? The ABC's War on Waste series, and China's new waste policies mean that waste and recycling are hot topics.

Planet Ark's National Recycling Week was founded 22 years ago, and this year's theme is From Waste War to Recycling Reboot. You can get involved at home, in your community, school or workplace. You could run a Friday File Fling in your work or home office, and recycle those paper files you no longer need. Or refresh your knowledge about what can and can't go in your council recycling bin. Remember the golden rules of recycling:

  • Stay loose - recycling goes into the bin loose, never in a plastic bag, and keep other soft plastic out too (recycle your soft plastics at supermarkets through the Redcycle program).
  • Easy does it - paper, cardboard, glass jars and bottles, metal cans and aerosols, cartons and rigid plastics are easy to recycle and accepted in almost all kerbside collections.
  • Into the garbage - crockery, window and drinkware glass, polystyrene, plastic bags, nappies and food go in the garbage.
  • Keep it clean-ish - Recycling does not need to be spotless - just scrape off solid food and give it a quick rinse.
  • Drop 'em off - Kerbside systems cannot separate items like mobile phones, computers, batteries and printer cartridges. Find local drop-off services at the Recycling Near You website.
  • If in doubt, leave it out - Putting the wrong thing in the wrong bin can ruin your good recycling efforts.
