End Date 18th Aug 2020 2:00pm

Description

Bushfires have a devastating impact on the ground, but also affect the atmosphere and ocean.

As part of National Science Week, this annual public lecture is presented by the Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society and the Australian Marine Science Association.

Presenters:

  • Dr Paul Fox Hughes, a researcher working in the Bureau of Meteorology. Paul will talk about "how the weather influences fire, how fires can affect the weather, and what changes we might expect to these in the future".
  • Associate Professor Pete Strutton, a biological oceanographer at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies. Pete will discuss "how dust and bushfire smoke deposited in the ocean can stimulate plankton growth".
  • Associate Professor Catriona MacLeod, head of the Ecology & Biodiversity Centre at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies.
