I am an island woman

I am conscious of how our island status affects our psyche. We are surrounded by coastlines and edges. Our parameters contain our body of land, and they both bound and protect us, and separate and connect us to the rest of the world. They are strength and fragility, constantly tested by the elements, constantly changing. In some way they define our identity.

I see our physical and psychological selves as wholly connected to the land. We are the land that we inhabit. We become it and it becomes us. At the edge, the woman becomes the rock and the rock becomes the woman. With her arms raised she is a pillar supporting the headland, her heart exposed but strong. With her body and soul part of the environment she protects, she defends the natural beauty of her island state. A contradiction in limestone, she is aware her cause is vulnerable and fragile. She looks out, facing the future knowing that we are not finished at the skin, for where we are is also who we are.
