Jan Jarvis - Woman in 2 Phases

Jan Jarvis
Woman in 2 Phases

My painting is centred on woman in two phases; woman alone-as an individual and woman, as friend, family member and contemporary.

No woman stands alone, each having someone, whether it is of the day, in this present generation or past and future. Woman stands alone at birth then attaches herself to others, mother, grandmother, friend, partner, God. Tasmanian women bear the burden of a harsh past, isolated with a loathsome history of conviction and transportation. Their strengths gained through this history, yet, there is still the need to be connected to another, to be part of someone else’s world – a shared world.

This presentation is in two phases, woman as an isolated individual and woman as belonging with another, but neither should stand remote from the other. My work depicts these phases of womanhood, alone and together, using colour and form and diptych format to imbue strength and emotion.
