Today’s visitors travelling the West Coast can enjoy the breathtaking scenery from comfortable motorcars or air-conditioned coaches. What they don’t see is the insurmountable isolation that still exists on the Western seaboard.

In 1871 the difficulties facing families and especially women who followed their men to start a new life included leaving their family, relatives and friends behind.

Isolation for a Mrs Harrison of Dubbil Barril meant having to establish a dairy farm on steep slopes covered with thick bush. With 10 cows she helped to supplement her husband’s income.
