Christine Briggs Contemporary Issues for Tasmanian Women
My work is primarily material based. I began to develop the idea of constucting a pair of shoes out of press studs when the reflective surface of the press stud attracted my attention. As the press studs were removed from their formal function, new possibilities and new ways of seeing opened up and stimulated the imagination. As different patterns and textures began to form the press stud was moulded and shaped into an alternative but fashionable and other than ordinary pair of shoe. The ordinary press stud had been transformed.
This extraordinary pair of shoes represents an alternative to the fashionable shoes worn by contemporary women of today. Whilst still fun they are not frivolous but symbolise ones freedom of self expression and sense of belonging.
