One
Inspired by the works of Alberto Giacometti, “One” represents two sometimes contradictory theories of being: On one hand she could be seen as a manifestation of the existentialist idea that we have no predetermined purpose or essence and we each, alone, must decide what we will be through our own thoughts and actions. On the other hand she could also represent Liebniz’s theory of Monads, in that she contains the source of her own action and future within herself and is not causally affected by other beings but behaves in accordance with her own created function. “One” looks thin and delicate but is actually strong enough to stand alone despite this apparent fragility. Whether she is creating her own unique essence or fulfilling the exclusive destiny for which she was made, she stands naked and tall on her little island, proud to be a woman and a distinct individual even if this sometimes means loneliness.
