Kate Hansford and pigs might fly…
I have worked as a GP in rural and urban Tasmanian centres for almost three decades and feel passionately about local issues including women's issues and environmental concerns.
I have learnt to love our Tasmanian landscape and to despair at the exploitation of our resources.
My print, and pigs might fly… is a darkly satirical look at these issues. Mother Nature is exposed under the sardine tin lid, we see the mermaids, in their feminine glory, but exposed and vulnerable.
I have tried to convey the sense of familiarity, of belonging, and of quiet enjoyment that living on this island means to me. I have tried to convey my unease that this is changing.
My print is strongly defined, as is our island with its rugged boundaries. The colours are strong and stark, black and white, red for passion and anger---.
Women: the mothers, sisters and partners, gentle and strong protectors of the future. I listen to our politicians rhetoric and think only one thing: and pigs might fly…
