Anna Williams Far from Idyllic
I have a friend who married a King Island beef farmer and has lived on King Island for the last twenty years. I asked her how she felt about “Island Life”.
Jenny said;
“I think island life suits men better than women. There is so much that men love to do, surfing, fishing, shooting and nights in the pub with their mates. Women feel cut off, they get lonely, a lot of them don’t make it, and they leave.”
Far From Idyllic represents the negative side of island life for women. My boat woman is a vessel full of responsibilities. She is exhausted, and stripped of her feminine curves and beauty. Her husband, the provider, turns his back on them, drinking his beer and fishing.
