Ministerial Child Care Advisory Council
Expressions of Interest are being sought for membership of the Council for eight positions that will become vacant at the end of the year due to completion of members’ terms of appointment.

Child Care Advisory Council

The Child Care Advisory Council was established under the Child Care Act 2001.  The Act provides for a system of licensing child care services, including standards for quality child care, which support the development of a cohesive and integrated child care sector.

The Council’s purpose is to assist the Minister for Education in the exercise of ministerial powers and funcions under the Act.

The purpose and goals of Council

To provide high quality strategic advice to the Minister about issues affecting the child care sector in Tasmania, that:

  • ensures the child care sector is responsive, flexible, accessible and provides high quality child care;
  • supports access to high quality child care services that are planned, affordable and support families’ needs;
  • supports the child care sector in increasing the professionalism of its workforce; and
  • fosters a community where child care is recognised and valued as an integral part of individual, family and community life.

Members provide a non-intrusive and professional point of reference for child care issues, provide timely and accurate advice and ensure dissemination, and obtain feedback from within their areas of expertise as required.  Terms of appointment may vary between one and three years.

Expressions of Interest are being called for suitably qualified Tasmanians to be members of the Ministerial Child Care Advisory Council.

Tasmanian Institute of Agricultural Research (TIAR)
The Tasmanian Institute of Agricultural Research (TIAR) is a joint venture between the Tasmanian Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment (DPIPWE) and the University of Tasmania.  Established as an agricultural research and development organisation in 1996, TIAR’s focus in recent years has been broadened to include climate change research, natural resource management, rural social research and the provision of food safety services, together with extension services for the dairy, vegetable, horticulture and extensive agriculture sectors in Tasmania.

TIAR’s principal roles are to:

  • Support the growth and long-term viability of agriculture in Tasmania, and
  • Support the delivery, by TIAR, of the University’s EDGE 2 agenda.

The TIAR Board is chaired by the Secretary of DPIPWE with representatives from DPIPWE, the University and agricultural industries.  The Board advises the Minister for Primary Industries and Water and the University of Tasmania on the efficient and effective operation of the Institute and sets strategic directions for research, development and extension.

There is currently a vacancy on the Board.

Board members should possess expertise in one or more of the following fields:

  • Leadership in primary industry RD&E
  • Production, processing and marketing
  • Development of strategic alliances or partnership opportunities in RD&E
  • Innovation including identification of opportunities and pathways to commercialisation and adoption
  • Communication and public relations
  • Natural resource management
  • Economics
  • Community development and engagement

Board positions are annual and the Board meets up to five times per year with an executive sub-committee meeting in between.

ABC and SBS Boards Vacancies
The Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy is calling for expressions of interest from individuals who have the necessary skills, qualifications and experience to contribute to the governance of either the Australian broadcasting Corporation (ABC) or Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) as a non-executive Director. Each Board has one vacancy.

Applications for Board appointment will be assessed under a merit-based selection process by an independent Nomination Panel, who will provide the Minister with a shortlist. All appointments to the ABC and SBS Boards are made by the Governor General, acting on advice of the Federal Executive Council.

Successful candidates will have demonstrated high-level leadership and vision, and the ability to articulate a clear direction for a public organisation engaged in the provision of broadcasting services. They will possess an understanding of, and commitment to, public sector governance and the highest ethical and professional standards.  Candidates with a past record of effective participation on boards and a demonstrated interest in Australian cultural or public life are encouraged to apply.

The principles of equal opportunity and diversity will be followed throughout the selection process.  Consideration will be given to ensuring the membership of the Boards encompasses diversity in gender and geographical representation.

Forest Practices Authority
The Minister for Energy and Resources seeks expressions of interest from persons suitably qualified for appointment to the board of the Forest Practices Authority to fill a vacancy in the following category:

1. a person with applied knowledge and expertise in environmental or natural resource management (s.4A(l)(b) of the Forest Practices Act 1985)

The Forest Practices Authority is an independent statutory authority responsible for the regulation of forest practices under the Forest Practices Act.  Enquiries regarding the role of the Forest Practices Authority should be directed to Graham Wilkinson, Chief Forest Practices Officer on 6233 7451.

Recreational Fishery Advisory Committee
The Minister for Primary Industries and Water is currently seeking nominations to fill nine vacancies for recreational fisheries representatives on the Recreational Fishery Advisory Committee (RecFAC).

The RecFAC meets 5-6 times a year to consider issues of importance for managing Tasmania’s recreational fisheries, providing advice to the Minister and the Department.  Members are not paid for their work on the Committee, however travel allowances may be paid to attend meetings.

Nominations are sought from individuals or representatives of fishing associations who are able to demonstrate an ability to provide strategic input into management, research and educational planning for recreational sea fishing.  An informal background briefing on fisheries management will be provided to appointees.

At least one representative will be considered from each major Tasmanian region (south, north/north west-east, and the northwest/west) and there will be up to 6 other representatives who may be either individuals or representatives of sea fishing associations.

Tasmanian Community Fund
The Tasmanian Community Fund was established in 1999 from the proceeds of the sale of the Trust Bank, to make grants for worthwhile community projects throughout the State.  Its mission is to make a difference by supporting projects which enhance the social, economic and environmental wellbeing of Tasmanians.

Since its establishment, the Board has allocated over $44 million to 1 186 projects around the State.  The Fund’s operations are governed by the Tasmanian Community Fund Act 2005.

Expressions of interests are sought from candidates with appropriate skills and experience for positions to be considered over the next six months on the Board of the Tasmanian Community Fund.

Applicants should possess demonstrated skills and experience required for the role, including:

  • Governance;
  • Business and financial skills;
  • Knowledge of, and/or, experience with community groups; and
  • A sound understanding of government and the public sector environment.

Animal Ethics Committee
The Animal Ethics Committee is constituted to ensure that all research and teaching involving the use of animals is carried out in a humane and ethical manner.  The committee is responsible for ensuring compliance with the Australian code of practice for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes.

Expressions of interest in joining the committee are sought by 26 October 2009 for the following position:

Category C:
A person selected on the basis of active membership of, and nominaation by, an animal welfare organisation.

The committee meets every month and members also participate in the inspection of animal facilities.

The appointment will be for a trial period of six months and supsequent two-year appointment by mutual consent.

Premier's Disability Advisory Council
Tasmanians with disability, their family members, those with a demonstrated interest in disability issues or with strong community connections to people with disability are invited to express interest in membership of the Premier's Disability Advisory Council.

The Council assists the Government to implement its Disability Framework for Action and provides advice on whole-of-government policy and programs that impact on Tasmanians with disability.

Participation on the Council is voluntary, with members reimbursed for out-of-pocket expenses.

The Council meets formally twice a year with up to six out-of-session meetings per year.  Members will be appointed for a three year term.

The closing date for expressions of interest is 5pm, Monday 19 October.

Tasmania’s South Regional Tourism Association (Tas South)
The twelve Southern Councils, as financial contributors to Tasmania’s South Regional Tourism Association (Tas South), have the right to appoint three of the seven Directors on the Tas South Board.

Tas South operates through the business unit known as Totally South Tourism – tourism development and marketing, whose website is www.totallysouth.com.au
Two appointments are to be made by the Councils in 2009; one for a period of one year and a second for a two year period, both commencing in November 2009.

Membership of the Board provides interested and suitably qualified people with an opportunity to make a significant contribution to the development and ongoing delivery of services to international and interstate visitors to Southern Tasmania, as well as to residents of all parts of the State.  All Board positions are honorary.

The STCA is seeking to appoint people who together will possess the following experience, knowledge, attributes and skills:

  • High level strategic, business and leadership skills and extensive experience in commerce, accounting, financial management or law; and the ability to apply these in the context in which Tasmania’s South Regional Tourism Association operates.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the role of Regional tourism, the rapid changes that are currently occurring in the marketing environment of tourism and the resultant challenges faced by the Industry.
  • High level of skills and experience in tourism, events or convention related businesses.
  • A combination of extensive public and private sector networks and the ability to influence and advocate on behalf of the Industry.

Tasmanian Electoral Commission Vacancy

Expressions of interest are sought from individuals who are interested in making a valuable contribution to the domocratic process in Tasmania by serving on the Tasmanian Electoral Commission in the position of member.

The Member of the Commission will be expected to have an interest in, and understanding of, the Tasmanian community and its democratic traditions.  A detailed knowledge of electoral systems is not necessary.

All positions on the Commission require strict political neutrality.  Under section 8 of the Electoral Act 2004, a person in ineligible to be appointed if that person is, or has been, in the period of 5 years immediately preceding the date of appointment:

  • a Member of the House of parliament of the Commonwealth or a State or Territory; or
  • a member of a party that is registered under the Electoral Act or under an Act of the Commonwealth or another State or a Territory as a political party or a member of a similar organistion.

Appointment is by the Governor for a period of up to 7 years and is remunerated.  The Commission meets quarterly with additional meetings as required, for example, when parliamentary elections are held.

MULTICAP seeks board members
The Society for Multiply Disabled People of Tas Inc., more commonly known as MULTICAP, is seeking board members.

Multicap was established in 1973 to provide much needed support and assistance to families who had a family member with a physical and intellectual disability. Over the past 36 years the organisation has continued to grow and support people with disabilities in a variety of settings. The organisation started up by fundraising and highlighting the needs, this enabled it to develop a strong foundation in terms of assets that protect the organisation financially.

Multicap is interested in hearing from people who have a passion for equality and opportunity for people in the  community regardless of their ability; people who are innovative and forward thinking, interested in ensuring that the organisation is able to grow and serve the community for years to come.

The Board of Management meets on the 4th Wednesday each month from 7pm to 9pm. Meetings are generally held at Multicap’s Office at 35 Marine Terrace (corner of Spring St) in Burnie. Meetings generally go for 1½ hrs and work to an agenda with attachments that are forwarded to members the week before.
