International Women's Day

International Women’s Day (IWD) is marked on 8 March every year. It is a major day of global celebration for the economic, political and social achievements of women.

International Women's Day has a long history stretching back to 1857. Over the years, International Women's Day has evolved into a very important occasion and is now a worldwide event. The colours representing the day or 'women's colours': green being for growth; violet for dignity and white for purity of purpose.

Each year an amazing array of events is offered throughout Tasmania. Although International Women’s Day falls on 8 March, events are often planned throughout the whole week, giving all women the opportunity to participate in some way. The main themes of these events are the celebration of past achievements and contributions as well as future visions for women. Women Tasmania hosts a number of International Women’s Day events around the State including the Material Girl art competition and the ‘Big Breakfast’ in Hobart. Women Tasmania is also responsible for organising a calendar of events to celebrate IWD. This includes events organised by a variety of community organisations and also those organised by Women Tasmania.

Further information on IWD can be found on the Australian Government's Office of Women pages.
