Aboriginal family violence

The nature and extent of family violence in indigenous communities has been increasingly recognised as an issue of serious concern. This includes formal recognition by both the Ministerial Council on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Affairs (MCATSIA) and the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) of the need to develop specific strategies to address this problem.

The Partnerships Against Domestic Violence information on the Australian Government Office of Women website includes a range of reports produced on indigenous family violence.

ya pulingina kani  PDF icon(PDF, 410 KB) was the Tasmanian Aboriginal Family Violence Project funded by Partnerships Against Domestic Violence and conducted jointly by the Office of Aboriginal Affairs and Women Tasmania, Department of Premier and Cabinet. The project activities included consultations that were held statewide in order to scope the extent of Aboriginal family violence in Tasmania. The result is a narrative told by Aboriginal people about Aboriginal family violence in Tasmania. ya pulingina kani helped inform the development of Safe at Home.

An advisory group made up of Aboriginal community members, the ya pulingina kani Working Group, has been established to advise the State Government on the initiatives outlined in the ya pulingina kani - Good To See You Talk Report. PDF icon(PDF, 410 KB)

The ya pulingina kani Working Group will support the implementation of culturally appropriate responses for Aboriginal people under the Tasmanian response to family violence, Safe at Home.
