Tasmanian
OCYA works with other Tasmanian Government agencies on youth related programs, policy and legislative initiatives. See information on the websites of:
United Nations Youth Association (UNYA)
UNYA is a nationwide organisation, with a National Executive and Office-Bearers, as well as a Division in each State and Territory. It is a volunteer, non-profit, youth-for-youth organisation (all members under the age of 25). UNYA doesn’t receive any core funding. Presently, its major national events do not receive any project funding.
At a Tasmanian level, UNYA:
- Runs a four-day residential State Conference in National Youth Week, generally with about 60 young people;
- Teaches about international law and diplomacy in Legal Studies and Modern World History classes in colleges around the State;
- Runs a Model Security Council competition, generally attracting about 40 participants;
- Creates policy on various issues: for instance, civics education;
- Runs a community radio show on international affairs each Saturday at 1pm on Edge Radio 99.3fm;
- Has about 30 active organisational members.
At a national level, UNYA:
- Runs national events with delegates selected from Divisions, such as the UNYA National Youth Conference recently held in Hobart;
- Organises and runs international activities, including taking school-aged and tertiary student delegations to Europe, New Zealand and the US to participate in a historical/culture tour and in international Model United Nations events;
- Produces an academic journal of articles written by young people;
- Lobbies Government on youth participation issues, human rights, disarmament and other international affairs/social justice issues;
- Undertakes regional engagement programmes focussed on teaching regional Australians about the UN;
- Endorses the Youth Representative for the Australian Delegation to the UN, New York, who forms an official part of Australia’s mission.
