Tasmanian Youth Parliament

The Tasmanian Youth Parliament is part of a national youth development program, supported by the Tasmanian Government and YMCA Australia to provide young people with a forum to express ideas, concerns and expectations regarding the future of their state.

Held at Parliament House, the program is officially endorsed by the Tasmanian Premier (PDF, 79KB) and is supported by all sides of politics.

In Tasmania, Youth Parliament has been held annually for 20 years, delivered by a taskforce of young volunteers appointed by the Tasmanian Youth Government Association (TYGA), and supported by YMCA Australia.

To mark the start of an exciting new phase of the Tasmanian Youth Parliament, the Tasmanian Government has initiated a Tripartite Agreement with YMCA Australia and TYGA to enable a truly "for youth, by youth" program that recognises the contribution and skills of the TYGA Taskforce.

Youth Parliament educates young people about the parliamentary system and provides an opportunity for students to create Youth Motions and Bills and communicate their opinions to government. It also provides learning and development opportunities in:

  • civic engagement
  • public speaking and debating
  • writing
  • leadership and mentoring
  • event management

The program is aimed at students in grades 11 and 12 and involves a seven day camp with a mix of parliamentary-related training, recreational activities, a "mocktail" party with members of Parliament, a Government House reception and a variety of other functions to allow contact with politicians and other government officials.

The 2009 Tasmanian Youth Parliament will be held at Parliament House from 7-11 September.
