Transport

The Children and Young People in Tasmania (CAYPIT) resource is designed to facilitate statistics, qualitative research and other information to a cross section of audiences, including young people, policy makers, program planners and service providers at a state, regional and local level.

At a Glance – Transport

Tasmania has the most regionally dispersed population in Australia and, as a consequence, councils have consistently identified transport as a major issue for young people.[1]

In 2006, 84 per cent of Tasmanians used private motor vehicles, with 23 per cent of drivers carrying passengers. [2]

Approximately 12,700 students used free school bus services in 2005-06.[3]

The Australian Bureau of Statistics recorded nationally that 14 per cent of people used public transport in 2006 (up from 12 per cent in 1996). Tasmania had the lowest support for public transport at six per cent.[4] Of those Tasmanians who used public transport in 2006, 39 per cent did so because they could not drive or were unlicensed and 31 per cent of Tasmanians using public transport did so by choice.[5]

In 2006, 10.2 per cent of 18-24 year olds reported that they had difficulty accessing transport.[6]
