In Tasmania, approximately 23 per cent of the population has a disability.[1] In June 2005, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) recorded that more than 8.6 per cent (8,300) of children aged zero to14 years in Tasmania had a disability of some kind, with 58 per cent of these children having a profound or severe disability.[2] For the same period, there were 3,220 15 to19 year olds in Tasmania with a disability[3]. The 2006 ABS Census identified that approximately 1.6 per cent of children and young people aged zero to 24 years required assistance for core activities.[4] In the 2006 ABS Census, 10.7 per cent of Tasmanians aged 15 years and over reported they provided unpaid assistance to a person with a disability, long-term illness or problems relating to old age.[5] In Tasmania, 95 per cent of school aged children with a disability attended a mainstream school.[6] In the 2006-07 period, 7.3 per cent of vocational education and training students reported having a disability.[7]
