The Children and Young People in Tasmania (CAYPIT) resource is designed to facilitate statistics, qualitative research and other information to a cross section of audiences, including young people, policy makers, program planners and service providers at a state, regional and local level.
At a Glance – Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders
To be eligible for Aboriginal specific services in Tasmania a person must provide evidence of their eligibility in accordance with the Tasmanian Government’s Whole of Government Policy on the Eligibility for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Specific Programs and Services. The criteria for eligibility requires that an Aboriginal person or Torres Strait Islander

is of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent

identifies as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander

is accepted as such by the community in which he or she lives or has lived.
It is important to note that when looking at statistical information from the ABS and other Commonwealth sources about Aboriginal children and young people in Tasmania that this information is based on self identification.
