About the Office of Aboriginal Affairs

Danny Gardner & Paul Mabb at the Bruny Island land return 2006The Office of Aboriginal Affairs is responsible for high-level consultation with Tasmania’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population. It provides an accurate representation of the Community view to advise the Minister, Premier and Cabinet on the efficient, effective management of policies, legislation and programs that affect Tasmania’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population.  The Office also seeks to assist Tasmania’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population to achieve social, cultural and economic outcomes and promote greater understanding and acceptance of Aboriginal culture.

The Office of Aboriginal Affairs is responsible for administering the Aboriginal Lands Act 1995.

The Office of Aboriginal Affairs contributes to a range of Tasmania Together benchmarks, particularly those related to Goal 7: ‘Acknowledgement of the right of Aboriginal people to own and preserve their culture, and share with non-Aboriginal people the richness and value of that culture’.
