Our role and services

Mission

Multicultural Tasmania's role is to ensure that appropriate and equitable services are provided to all Tasmanians, taking into account the State's cultural, linguistic and religious diversity.

What we do

Bridget Field teaches students at the multicultural Campbell Street Primary School in HobartMulticultural Tasmania advises the Tasmanian Government on the most effective ways to manage the State’s cultural diversity to the advantage of all Tasmanians by:

  • working to improve the understanding of the benefits of cultural and linguistic diversity in Tasmania; and
  • seeking ways to increase the number of migrants arriving in Tasmania each year.

How we can help

  • Advice on multilingual signage, pamphlets, etc.
  • Advice on the use of interpreters.
  • Contacts with multicultural communities.
  • General advice on multicultural affairs.

Multicultural Tasmania

  • Contributes to initiatives across all government agencies in the development of multicultural policies.
  • Is involved in a variety of research activities. These include participation in the joint Commonwealth/State Immigration and Research Program and representation on the State Research Reference Group.
  • Maintains extensive liaison with all levels of government and the community through a wide network of contacts, and through participation on committees and at forums associated with migrant settlement and multicultural affairs.
  • Provides administrative support to the Tasmanian Advisory Council on Multicultural Affairs (TACMA). The Council, a non-statutory body, was established by the Government in 1992 to strengthen input to the development of policies responsive to the needs and aspirations of the community.
  • Provides assistance and guidance to multicultural community groups and individuals on all matters of common concern, including advice on the availability of financial assistance.
