Premier's Disability Advisory Council

The Premier’s Disability Advisory Council (PDAC) was established in February 2007. Its primary purpose is to assist the Premier and Government to implement the Disability Framework for Action 2005-2010.

PDAC works with Government and the broader community to promote the inclusion and participation of people with disability in community life; reduce barriers for people with disability and promote good quality programs an services.

PDAC is chaired by the Premier and includes the Minister for Health and Human Service, Hon Lara Giddings as a permanent member. Other Ministers may assist on matters relevant to their portfolio.

PDAC has 11 community members who come from across Tasmania. The group includes people with disability, parents, person from an advocacy organisation, a CEO of a disability organisation, a representative of a peak body for service providers, a support worker, a person working in Local Government and others with a an interest in education, training and tourism.

The PDAC meets at least twice a year with the Premier as well as meeting on working groups as the PDAC’s work program requires.

Its work program for 2007-2008 includes three projects that have a whole-of-government and community focus:

  • a report on the availability of assistive technologies to Tasmanians with disability and options for improving access to modern equipment and technology
  • improving the quality and accessibility of information about government services for Tasmanians with disability
  • future planning for families that have a member with an intellectual or cognitive disability.

The PDAC held workshops for families about future planning for their son or daughter in Ulverstone, Launceston and Hobart during May 2008.

During 2008-2009 PDAC ‘s work program will examine the topics of housing and homelessness, and will develop recommendations that will be useful to the Government in the development of its social inclusion strategy for Tasmania.
